Project Summary

There is one type of traveler who is the explorer, liking to travel in a spur of the moment. However there are problems without planning ahead, which lead to bad travel experience. The goal of this project is to design a real-time information visualization in augmented reality, which allows the users to use mobile phone or AR glass to get real-time information while they are traveling and truly enjoy themselves during the trip.

Problem Definition

One kind of traveller prefer doing extensive preparation. They usually have flights, restaurants, hotels and attractions information ready before travel. Another kind of traveller are spontaneous and usually go with the flow. They are excited to see what's in store for them at the new destination.

These two types of travelers are named as Planner and Explorer.

There are many websites and apps available for the planners to obtain informations, but not many resources for the explorers. The need to get readily information at the travel sites for the explorers inspires this project.

Research Process

User Target Research 

With an increasing number of youth, student and educational travelers, youth travel market have become more important than ever.

The youth, student and educational travel market accounts for over 20% of all international arrivals (equals to 207 million arrivals and US$194 billion in 2012).Youth travelers stay longer (average 53 days), spend more (US$1,000 to US$6,000 per trip) and travel more frequently (1.44 trip pa) than the average tourist and more often than not, they use their money with local retailers.

A conservative estimate predicts that the youth, student and educational travel market will reach 300 million arrivals by 2020 and represent US$320 billion in market value. 

User target: international students – youth explorer traveler

User definition: Youth Travel is defined as independent trips of less than one year by people aged 15- 30. Unlike typical vacations, youth travel is motivated by many factors, including the desire to experience other cultures, build life experience, and benefit from formal and informal learning opportunities from other countries.

Cognitive Walkthrough: Following a youth explorer to travel and record her path and emotion.

Pain Points:

  • Youth explorer prefers objective information like their own feelings, instead of subjective information like other’s comments.

  • Youth explorer prefers seeing and experiencing historical attractions, instead of reading a long text of introduction in a different language.

  • Youth explorer travels in a spur of the moment without knowing the places and activities in advance. 

  • Youth explorer doesn’t like using mobile phones for searching attractions, restaurants, etc. However, the inevitability of this experience will lower their travel quality. 


Interview with one of the international youth travel user, who is also an youth explorer.

Pain Points:

  • Prefer her own exploration than getting informations from websites. 

  • Want to learn events and activities in real-time.

  • Some attractions have been damaged by human.

  • Undesirable living condition will affect travel experience.

Unlike Tripadvisor or Yelp, the goal of this project is to fulfill youth explorer's needs.

Problem Statement

The natural desire of explorers to explore everything first hand and the lack of resources for real time information result in great frustrations among explorers. 


Therefore I propose a new application to solve this problem: 

A real-time information visualization in augmented reality.

The system should get information by itself automatically and show information in real-time. So augmented reality and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology can support this project.

Information Selection

The youth explorer do not like to get overwhelmed by useless information. The key of this project is to filter all the available information and present the most critical ones to our target customers I use the card sorting method to figure out different users' travel preference and deliver the real time information when needed.

The idea is, with augmented reality technology, users can use mobile phone or AR glass to get real-time information while they are traveling. So they can have better travel experience without planning before.

User Flow

The user flow shows each step to go through this AR interaction system with mobile phone or AR glass.

Key Points:

  • To avoid showing too many irrelevant information, the system will check users'  attention time. For example, If the user looks at a restaurant for more than 5 seconds, the mobile phone or the glasses will display the AR information of the restaurant.

  • The system will store all of user's past  decisions and analysis to learn user's preference. In this way, only the preferred information will deliver next time.
